Academy Gallery: [Campo della Carita | Dorsoduro 041-522-2247] The Gallerie dell'Accademia houses the major collections of Venetian painting from 1300 to 1700. Collections include Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of Mary, Carpaccio's Crucifixion and Apotheosis, Giovanni Bellini's Madonna with Child between Saints Catherine and Mary Magdalen, Giorgione's Tempest, Lorenzo Lotto's Portrait of a Young Gentleman in His Studio, Paolo Veronese's Feast in the House of Levi, and Tintoretto's Theft of St Mark's Body and Crucifixion. [Monday to Saturday 9am to 7pm, Sunday 9am to 2pm]
Peggy Guggenheim Collection: [Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, 701 Dorsoduro 041 240 5411] The Palazzo Venier dei Leoni was bought by the American heiress Peggy Guggenheim inn 1948 where she lived until her death in 1979. The Guggenheim collection has become one of the most distinguished collections of modern art in Italy. It spans the artistic movements of Cubism, European Abstraction and Surrealism with notable works by Brancusi, Marino Marini, Kandinsky, Picasso, Magritte, Rothko, Max Ernst, Dali and Jackson Pollock. [Opening time: Daily except Tuesdays 10am to 6pm]
Basilico di San Marco: [Piazza San Marco] One of the most impressive and exotic cathedrals in Italy and maybe Europe. The shrine was built in 832 but was destroyed by the doge in 976 and then the present basilica was finished in1094. The architecture and décor combines East and West with bronze and coloured marble outside and mosaics and treasures inside. Overall the Church takes your breath away.
Ca' d'Oro: [Calle Ca' d'Oro, Cannaregio 041 5222349] The Ca' d'Oro [Golden House] takes its name from the gilding that originally decorated its Canal Grande faįade. Built between 1425 and 1434 the Ca' d'Oro faįade and palazzo is the most magnificent example of domestic Gothic architecture in Venice. The Ca' d'Oro also holds the Galleria Franchetti collection of bronzes, tapestries and paintings. The views over the Canal Grande are fantastic. [Open daily from 9am to 2pm]
Glass Museum at Murano: [Fondamenta Giustinian 8, Murano] The museum follows the history of Murano glass from the 15th Century to the current day. [Open - Thursday - Tuesday 10.00 17.00]
