Berlin restaurantsThe German's love their food and for Berliners, eating out is a particularly favourite past time and one taken very seriously. Over the years Berlin has evolved to a chic European city full of fantastic and quality ethnic eateries. With classic Berlin delicacies like rouladen [beef rolls with bacon, onions, and pickles] and schlachtplatte [a plate of cold meat and sausage] you can now enjoy Indian, Japanese, Thai and other ethnic cuisine.

The places to go are fashionable Mitte and Schöneberg where you'll find a host of restaurants serving French and Italian and Charlottenburg for the more traditional gourmet dishes.

Restaurants in Mitte

FELIX Restaurant: [Behrenstrasse 72, Adlonpalais, Tel: 30-206-28-60]. This restaurants/club is where you'll find celebs and the high heiled Berliners mixing it up in one of Berlin's coolest venues. It's located in the Adlon Hotel, you'll find a delicious blend of Italian and Eastern. If you stay late you can groove with the best in one of Berlin's hotest night spots. S-BAHN: Unter den Linden

Margaux: [Unter den Linden 78, Tel: 30-226-52-61-1] One of the few restaurants in Berlin that has a Michelin star and they're making the most of it. Black marble, gold leaf on the ceiling and th best service make this French restaurant a must visit for anyone. Reservations needed. S-BAHN: Unter den Linden

VAU: [Jägerstrasse 54-55, Tel: 30-202-97-30] For a bit of suckling pig with sauerkraut and leg of lamb with braised vegetables this is the place to come. Frequented by business men during the day, it's holds some charm at night. Reservations recommended. S-BAHN: Hausvogteiplatz

Zur Letzten Instanz: [Waisenstrasse 14-16, Tel: 30-242-5528] An old establishment and a little stuffy but a great experience non the less. This restaurant once served Napoleon and Gorbachev. Established in 1621 still going strong. Zur Letzten serves up traditional Berlin fare.

Restaurants in CHARLOTTENBURG

Alt Nürnberg: [Königsallee 16, Europa-Center, Tel: 30-261-4397] Bring a good apetitite at this tradtional Berlin restaurant. There's a hefty menu here of real German cuisine blended with Bavarian decor. Reservations recommended. U-BAHN: Zoologische Gärten or Kurfürstendamm

Alt Luxemburg: [Windscheidstrasse 31, Tel: 30-323-87-30] This charming restaurant has traditional Berlin fare on the menu with a twist of Eastern influence. Dishes such as Brandenburg duck with pineapple chutney and honey-glazed duck breast are served within elegant ambience. Reservations required. U-BAHN: Sophie-Charlotte-Platz

Sachiko Sushi: [Grolmanstrasse 47, Tel: 30-313-2282] This a trendy and upmarket sushi restaurant. Chrome and black decor is mixed with great service and even better Sushi. it's great entertainment but doesn't come cheap.

Restaurants in KREUZBERG

Altes Zollhaus: [Carl-Herz-Ufer 30, Tel: 30-692-33-00] Located in a timber customs house that overlooks the Landwehrkanal, Altes Zollhaus offers great food in a rustic atmosphere. The menu is excellent as it the wine list and during the warmer months you can sit outside in a picturesque. Reservations are a must. U-BAHN: Prinzenstrasse

Gorgonzola Club: [Dresdener Str. 121, Tel: 615 64 73] Excellent and ceap Italian eatery. They serve great pizzas and pasta dishes include linguine with fresh water prawns in white wine sauce. The wine list is good as is the house wines.

Henne: [Leuschnerdamm 25, Tel: 30-614-7730] This restaurant definitely has two things: a distinct pub atmosphere and the most succulent chicken to be found in the city. Reservations recommended.

Restaurants in SCHÖNEBERG

India Haus: [Feurig Strasse 38, Tel: 30 781 2546] This is a great Indian located near the Odeon cinemas. There's a huge selection of south and north Indian cuisine including the tantalizing almond soup and an enticing kofte. Bahn Schöneberg, U-Bahn Innsbrucker Platz.

Storch: Wartburgstrasse 54, Tel: 30 784 2059] If you like your sauerkraut, sausage and pork dishes, head to this Alsatian restaurant in Schöneberg. There's a rustic ambience that fits pefectly with the food. Large tables offer diners the opporutnity to share their space with strangers and tuck into some excellent Berlin fare. Reservations are necessary.
