Syracuse, in the southeastern corner of Sicily, is located between the Great Port and the Iblei mountains. Its oldest portion is actually an island called Ortegia, which harbours the famous Spring of Arethusa of Greek mythology, as well as the Temple of Apollo.
Once a powerful city rivaling Athens the city was first founded in 734 BC. Syracuse was once home to Archimedes, Aeshylus, Plato and other Greek scholars, and at one point was on par with Athens and Carthage, in terms of intellectual center, but was conquered by Romans and Arabs from 211 B.C. to A.D. 879.
Syracuse can be divided into two main areas. The island of Ortigia and 2km across town, the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis (archaeological zone).
Choosing a Sicily hotel in Syracuse means being in one of the most culturally rich cities in Italy. The depth of history is astonishing and here you can also find some of the seafood including pasta with mussels and urchins which is available in the Spring and Autumn.
