The area around Prague Castle is called Hradcany and spreads from the hill of Strahov down to the Hradcanske Square. Hradcany was actually a town before it became a borough of Prague in 1598. It has suffered greatly from fires and wars and is an out door museum of well-kept antiquities.
Here you can visit Hradcany Namesti which has fantastic examples of baroque and rococo-style residences and Strahov Monastery [started in 1140 and completed in the 18th century], which features a baroque church where Mozart is said to have played. This is also a good area to sample some typically Czech cuisine.
